What are the Different Skin Types?

There are four basic types of healthy skin,

  • Normal
  • Dry
  • Oily
  • Combination skin

Genetics play a large part in the type of skin that we have.

Ideally we would like normal skin. With normal skin  our pores are barely visible, the tone is even and there are no blemishes. Our skin is protected by the acid mantle. When the acid mantle is intact and functioning our skin is normal. Sebum is secreted at a rate that leaves our skin soft and supple.

Dry skin  occurs when there is less sebum secretion. Sebum is oil that our sebaceous glands secrete, it helps keep the skin lubricated.  Your skin needs sebum and lipids such as ceramide to stay soft.  Once our acid mantle is disrupted, dry skin can occur. Dry skin is more prone to redness and  inflammation    Natural moisturizing factors referred to as NMFs may also be decreased. These natural moisturizing factors include urea, amino acids and lactic acid. All of these components attract water, when they are diminished our skin is dry.

Dry skin is unable to retain moisture and is more sensitive to  some skin care ingredients. The lose of our natural facial oils leads to flakiness. Dry skin also tends to lose elasticity quicker than and fine lines are more visible.

People with dry skin should,

Avoid harsh cleansers that can strip the skin. As we mentioned above, our skin needs its natural oils to stay healthy. Some cleansers can strip the skin and disrupt our acid mantle.

Avoid products with fragrance which may make your skin more sensitive.  Fragrances can contain chemicals that irritate the skin and eyes. If you have dry skin you will more sensitive to irritants.

Refrain from taking hot showers as this will further dry out your skin. The warmer water can wash away more of our lipids which help hydrate and protect the skin. It is important to cleanse our skin but not strip it.

Use a humidifier to hydrate the air. This is especially true during the winter months when the heat is on. Dry forced air will dry your skin.

Protect yourself from harsh weather such as wind, sun, or cold. These environmental factors can irritate the skin increasing redness and inflammation.

Avoid ultraviolet (UV) radiation from tanning beds and sun tanning. The sun bathing and ultraviolet radiation from sun tanning beds can dry the skin, they should be avoided.

Moisturizing your skin is key. This cream can help nourish and moisturize dry skin, it is filled with botanicals that can help calm the skin.

Oily skin has increased sebum production referred to as seborrhea. It may be related to genetics and or hormone changes. Androgens will increase sebum production which can increase the debris within the pore making the pore more visible. Although the size of the pore does not change we know the appearances of pores can be more visible depending on the amount of sebum that is in the pore.

It may appear that people with oily skin has enlarged pores as the pore are filled with sebum. Oily skin is prone to blackheads and other blemishes. It occurs more often in men than in women and it predominantly affects adolescents and younger persons. This cream helps improve blemishes.Canadian Willowherb and a biomimetic tripeptide work synergistically to minimize the appearance of breakouts and redness, while a stable form of Vitamin C helps to brighten spots.

Combination has both oily areas typically along the T zone which includes forehead, nose and chin. The cheek areas may be dry.

Exfoliation is important. It helps clean out the pores by loosening connections between the skin cells. It also helps remove dead skin cells which can block the pore and cause acne.

As you can see there are several different skin types. No matter what skin type you have,

  1. Use a broad spectrum sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays.
  2. Avoid direct sunlight, and wear a hat and sunglasses.
  3. Avoid smoking
  4. Keep  hydrated by increasing your water intake.
  5. Wash your skin gently but thoroughly every day and never wear makeup to bed.
  6. Moisturize your skin
