You already might have heard a lot about the numerous benefits of drinking green tea. But did you know that it can even cure acne? We’ll take you through the science behind it and also about how to consume it to reap the best results.

How can Green Tea cure Acne?

Green Tea is a very good home remedy for acne vulgaris because it helps to:

1. Reduce Inflammation:

Green is an abundant source of catechins. The catechin epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) present in green tea is beneficial in treating acne as well as rosacea. It acts by decreasing inflammation. It also prevents the conversion of testosterone into DHT, which aids in the curing of hormonal acne. EGCG is a very effective anti-oxidant which has immunomodulatory, photoprotective, antiangiogenic and anti-inflammatory properties, all of them beneficial in treating acne.

2. Reduce Sebum Production

Surplus production of acne is one of the primary reasons leading to acne vulgaris. It causes the dead skin cells to stick to each other and bulge out pores. The secretion of sebum reduces significantly with topical application of green tea when done regularly.

3. Increase Antioxidant Levels

Polyphenols present in green tea are potent antioxidants. After entering the body they become antioxidants and help the skin’s immunity in the combat against acne. It also prevents sebaceous glands from producing excess sebum, i.e., oil. Its external application on affected region reaps great benefits against acne vulgaris.

4. Reduce Acne-causing Bacteria

The catechin epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) present in green tea is a real warrior in this battle. Its presence in the body inhibits the growth of the acne-supportive P. acnes bacteria.

5. Increase Mineral Content

Green tea is rich in zinc minerals. Zinc is usually used in tropical creams owing to its antimicrobial property, which again is rewarding in the treatment for acne.

Overall, green tea helps prevent or cure acne and lessens the redness and inflammation caused by it and thus prevents irritation and further infections.

Selecting the right green tea for curing acne is important. You need to check out for all the required medicinal properties in the tea that you buy. The green tea should have the highest possible amount of antioxidants (especially EGCG).

Do some research before selecting a specific brand and a specific product.  Loose leaves have higher levels of antioxidants than tea bags. Still if cannot find loose leaves, look for tea bags containing the highest EGCG content. Also remember that green tea has a shelf life of 6 months, so choose a fresh one.
